should you get a generator for your home?

Many people consider buying backup power generators for their homes. Backup generators can be extremely beneficial in New England, and especially in the Boston area. This is because they can provide electrical power to a home even if the primary power source is knocked out during a storm.

Boston tends to experience a large amount of serious storms throughout the year. Many of these storms have high winds and large amounts of snow. These intense storms frequently knock out powerlines and cause many homes in the Boston area to lose power. Losing power in the winter months can lead to extremely cold temperatures inside the home, which is not only uncomfortable but can also be dangerous.

Backup generators solve this problem by providing a secondary source of power to a home if the primary source is knocked out. Large backup generators are typically installed outside of the home and are connected to a gas line, which is what they run on. Many home generators can also be set up to automatically monitor the amount of power in a home. If this power level drops, then the generator can automatically turn on to supply power to the home.

This way the home never has to be without power, even in the middle of the harshest winter storm, and even if power has been knocked out in all of the surrounding homes in the neighborhood.

How much does it cost to have a generator installed?

The cost of generator installation can vary dramatically depending on the size of the generator. Smaller generators which can only run a few household systems and have a max output of 7-10KW, only cost about $1,000 to install and about $2,500 - $4,000 to purchase. However, larger systems which can power your whole house for long periods of time and which have a max output of 22-45 KW can cost several thousand dollars to install, and $9,000 - $15,000 to purchase.

So, buying a backup generator and having it installed can be a significant expense. However, if you have ever gone through a power outage in Boston in January, then you know exactly how important it can be to make sure that you have power all year long. This is especially true if you have young children or elderly people living in your house with you.

How do you get a generator installed?

The best way to get a generator installed in your Boston or South Boston home is to call a South Boston electrical contractor, or a professional electrician in Boston to come and set it up. Unless you are a trained electrician, you should definitely not try to do the installation yourself. It could potentially be very dangerous. It is always wise to practice home electrical safety and that means letting a licensed electrician take care of the generator installation. An electrician will be able to take care of the installation efficiently and in a very secure manner.

Generators are lifesavers. Imagine your business is in its peak hours and suddenly the power went out in the entire city. Without a generator, your business will lose profit for that day. That’s the reason business establishments have generators. They are back up systems. They are the plan B when something goes wrong. You will never know when there’s a storm coming or a fire or a busted cable that needs repair. You will always have a peace of mind when you have one. They can be expensive but they are worth the money. When you are buying home appliances, it’s always a sign of good foresight when you’re buying a generator.
